Project: The Three Little Pigs from the Alabama Gulf Coast
Social Studies Objectives:
ACOS # 3: Identify the components of various ecosystems.
identifying ways in which humans alter the physical environment
ACOS # 4: Identify human and physical criteria to identify regions.
Overview: Using the Alabama Gulf Coast as the setting, students will create innovations of the classic folktale, The Three Little Pigs. Using PowerPoint software, students will include regional characteristics, including native and invasive examples of flora and fauna.**
Time Frame: Several 45 minute periods
Materials: copy of The Three Little Javelinas by Susan Lowell, prepared introductory PowerPoint, prepared folder of digital images including native and invasive species posted on lab computers in shortcuts folders, prepared guide and rubric, PowerPoint software
Procedure: Greet students, use PowerPoint to introduce the project including objectives, review of ecosystems and alterations, review of regions. Share story, stopping as needed to point out characteristics of ecosystem and region used in story.Review folders that contain native and invasive plants in Alabama Gulf Coast region. Refer students to the guide sheet as a guide in preparing story in PowerPoint format. Students may work in pairs to create their Alabama Gulf Coast versions of "The Three Little Pigs".
